DSafe is a backup software, that automates the procedures for data backup. It works absolutely hands free. When you run DSafeSetup your Backup Profile is setup automatically for each drive, in case you need to fine tune what you want to backup you have total flexibility to do so. Backups will take place daily at the specified time, automatically. If you have selected hourly backups then backups will start at the scheduled Start Time, when that backup gets completed the next backup will be scheduled an hour after that.
The backups are compressed to save disk space, to reduce network activity and also to encrypt files when needed.
DSafe uses Delta technology to backup only edited portion within a file. DSafe5 blends the advantages of Differential backup and Incremental backup by using the Spanning Tree Logic to create Deltas. In the rare case where the Delta grows too large the entire file is backed up again.
The files deleted by you would still remain intact within the backup area unless the backups get refreshed. So you can restore your file even if you notice accidental deletion after a few days.
DSafe uses a temporary Snapshot by using Window’s Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) while compressing files on Local Drives. This process allows DSafe to take consistent backups of files even if they are Open and being used actively. Applications flush their data when VSS is triggered to maintain consistency. If any application does not follow this protocol then the backup may not be consistent.
Each individual machine detects the data necessary for backup and performs compression on its own. As a result, it uses very little network bandwidth. This method avoids overloading of the network.
Normally you would have to share a drive for data transfer, this shared portion becomes available to hackers and Viruses too. DSafe can transfer data to unshared machines. This ensures data security and restricts Viruses activity.
Accidental deletion or accidental moving of files is an error that keeps occurring with one and all. DSafe has a facility that automatically highlights these files names along with their folder, size & time as missing files. So the user gets notified of this loss at the very next backup.
For organizations with multiple branches, each branch can designate a destination machine for backups.
The machine you choose as DSafe server becomes the control centre. Configuration and monitoring of all Client machines can be done from the DSafe server alone. All log and setup info is stored in this machine. It also contains a DSafe Client Setup that needs to be installed on all Client machines which you want to backup or use as Destination.
Every local backup destination can be further replicated to a different location for Disaster Recovery. Timings for this can be scheduled too.
You can restore all files or selectively restore one or more files or folders. You can restore from the regular destination or from the Disaster recovery area with the same ease. Due to the Spanning Tree Logic restore is very efficient process even if your backup has not been refreshed for years.
Microsoft allocates 1TB of space with every Microsoft 365 license. DSafe5 can use that space to safeguard your machine's data.
DSafe backs up data with the folder information. Thus when you restore, they get restored to their respective folders. Even if you are resorting data to a new or formatted hard drive the similar layout will be maintained.
There can be times when you may not want to restore the latest backup data. Instead you may need to restore data from a backup taken two or three days prior. DSafe allows you to set the number of days that you may want to go back to a Point-in-time restore. This is helpful in situations where there is a Ransomware attack/Silent Disk Corruption over days and your latest files are corrupt.
If you have many machines copying data across the network together you would encounter a network jam. With DSafe you will never ever have a network jam, even if 100 machines are backing up simultaneously. This is due to the option of Maximum Simultaneous copies that can be set in the Destination configuration.
The Setup of DSafeServer needs some attention only if the Server will be accessed across the cloud else the defaults can be clicked and setup is a 30 Seconds process and you are ready to start.
With the Network Status module you can check connectivity to all machines. It also provides a report of disk space utilisation of all computers on network.
Certain departments or persons whose data could be secretive will need to be kept inaccessible. Data encryption allows the individual user to safeguard his data with a secure password procedure. The encryption used is AES 256 and takes almost the same time as compressing without the password.
DSafe maintains a record of day-to-day backup progress, along with the detailed names of the files that it backed up. A summary of this log is created and can be sent to you by email.
DSafe can backup data for all versions of MS Windows.
If there are three files with different names/folders but having the same contents, DSafe will only backup one of them. From the point of view of the user, they are three different files.
DSafe recognizes renaming of directories. This is monitored constantly and if user renames a folder DSafe will know that it need not backup those files, unless they have been updated.

DSafe5 uses TLS (Transport Layer Security)1.2 or 1.3 to communicate Keeping your its ports safe from hackers. For this type of communication we need Digital Certificates. DSafe internally creates these certificates unique for each customer.
DSafe NEVER sends any user data files to it's own Servers. If you do not want to backup to a public cloud you can prepare your own Private Cloud and your data is safe within your environment even when travelling across countries or backing up across locations.

Every NAS box has an inbuilt FTP Server (FTPS Server is preferred). You can use it for direct backup from Client machines or you can also use it as a disaster recovery option.

Document Files, Spreadsheets, Pictures (products / personal), Emails, Software Program files, Music files, Data files, Drawings, Presentation files, Text files, etc. You can selectively specify wildcards (*.doc, *.cdr, etc). You can also selectively specify folders. You may also specify to backup specific wildcards/all files from a certain folder. DSafe allows almost all the permutations and combinations required. Similar to its ability to include, you can also exclude unwanted files / file types.
During the first backup which can be large there will be a noticeable change. After that during incremental backups you may not even realize that backups are taking place.
The time taken for backup will depend solely on the size of the daily increments and machine performance. But generally it would be anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Of course the first time / full backups will take a much longer.
DSafe starts the backup process automatically at the pre-scheduled time, without even a single click. It starts the process, completes the same and prepares a log of work done.
DSafe is a MS Windows based software. It is compatible with Win7 (Desktops Series), Server 2008 R2 (Server Series) or Later.
DSafe is a Client/Server Application and has to be installed on all computers on the network which need to be in the backup environment. The backup environment would have one machine as its server and the others as clients.
DSafe has a good scheduling system wherein you can select backup to occur as frequently as every hour and as low as once a week.
You can create as many destinations are required. In case you have multiple branches then you can maintain backups at the respective branch. Each branch data can then be replicated onto a common destination at HO for disaster recovery.

When you setup DSafe you will need to specify the backup destination/s. All the backup files of the computers in the network will be stored in this specified area.
DSafe automatically creates a folder ‘DSafeback’ in the destination Folder, within which you will have as many folders as are the machines in the network. Each folder is created with its own machine code and Name, thus making it easy to identify. Data of each machine in the network is stored in its respective folder in a compressed format. All files selected for backup would be stored within a single compressed file. If the compressed data crosses 30Gb then multiple compressed files are prepared. Every file that is backed up is stored with its folder structure information.
If you have sufficient space for backup, DSafe will not need additional hardware. You will have to note that a machine being used will be prone to Virus infections and other issues. The recommended option is to have a dedicated unshared destination.
A dedicated unshared machine with good network connectivity is recommended to store the backup data. Browsing the Web or using USB devices on this machine that could lead to virus infecting the machine should be avoided. Only specialized personnel should be allowed access to this machine. There should be enough space on the Destination Drive to hold the backups. The DSafeServer and Destination can be the same machine.
If the data coming to this machine is across the WAN then it needs a Public Static IP. A Ports range as suggested by the DSafe team may have to be allowed.
DSafe allows each user to encrypt their compressed file using AES 256 military level encryption. All transfers are done under secured layer using FTPS Protocol hence there is no need of sharing any drives/folders. Thus if the backup destination is not shared and backups are password protected, it would be next to impossible for a user to access any of the backup data.
DSafe allows each user to encrypt their compressed file using AES 256 military level encryption. The DSafe Client Configuration allows the Administrator to force the user to enter a password.
DSafe provides you with Email Alerts and several Logs reports with which you can check the backup logs. You can also group machines in such a way that relevant logs are sent to multiple recipients.
Restore is a very simple process in DSafe. You can restore all files or selectively restore a single or a set of files /folders. The best part of DSafe restore is that it maintains the original data structure of files / folders.
If a backup is password protected it can be restored only upon entering of the password. A user is permitted to restore only his own data. If administrator password is setup then the Administrator can restore another machine’s data (provided that backup is not password protected)

This journey began way back in 1990 riding the software-programming wave.
We tinkered around doing a lot of research and writing programs to bring customized products to the market.
Our company Software Smiths Infotech (India) Pvt. Ltd. was incorporated in 2006.
The company’s mainstay – a Data Backup & Restore software program branded DSafe was introduced in 2005.
Interestingly, our data backup software was launched a year before the company was even incorporated!
This software has been made available to medium and large corporates and has seen quite a few iterations in its versions DSafe1 through DSafe5 as a result of feedback from the market. Dsafe5 was launched towards the end of 2019.
